"Oasis in a Food Desert" artfully navigates between historical artistry and contemporary social issues. Inspired by Jacques-Louis David's 1793 masterpiece "The Death of Marat," this digital print reimagines the setting and the sub- ject to send a poignant message. It showcases a young Black
man enveloped in a bathtub surrounded by vibrant, fresh fruit. This oasis of abundance stands in stark contrast to the barren blacktop parking lot that surrounds him-a powerful metaphor
for the phenomenon of food deserts. While the posture and setting evoke a sense of martyrdom or sacrifice reminiscent of David's original work, the subject here also exudes a calm aura of rest and satisfaction, akin to the satiated feeling after a hearty Thanksgiving meal. This duality challenges viewers to reflect on the complexities of food scar- city, social justice, and the beauty that persists in the midst of adversity.
